Group Details: This group is designed for neurodivergent adolescents to have a safe space to interact socially with their peers through music exploration. The group will be facilitated by Kaelin McClure, a music therapy intern, but ideally led by the group members themselves, promoting autonomy, communication and collaboration. Music Therapy methods to be explored may include music listening, music creating (e.g., playing/singing with preferred music and songs, writing new songs or lyrics), and music improvisation (e.g., musical games, instrument play). Therapeutic focus areas would include positive peer interaction, self-expression and autonomy, and coping strategies for self-regulation, but may be adjusted based on the expressed needs and preferences of the group.

Why: Music is a great tool to help facilitate non-threatening and safe social interactions and cooperation within a group setting. Music experiences can facilitate communication and opportunities for autonomy and choice, individually and within the group. Preferred music and instrument play can be used for self-expression and as a coping strategy for self-regulation. Music is not processed in just one section of our brain, there is no music center. Different aspects of music are processed in different parts of our brain, which makes music an unique tool to impact and provide support for a variety of areas of need.

Facilitator: Kaelin McClure is a music therapy intern, in process of completing her 1200 clinical hours required before sitting for national board certification. She is current graduate student at Colorado State University and is expected to graduate in the spring of 2024 with a Master in Music Therapy degree. She is a mother of neurodiverse children and understands the need to be flexible in supporting individual's needs and goals. She believes in a client-centered, humanistic approach to therapy, following the clients lead and encouraging choice and autonomy. She has a neurological and trauma-informed background and is dedicated to creating a safe environment to help facilitate learning and growth.

This is an open group available to teens between the ages of 14-17 years old. The focus will be to utilize techniques within creative arts and therapeutic songwriting to meet goals in areas such as: community- building, Socioemotional Health, Anxiety & Depression management, Emotion identification, increase self-esteem, coping skills, and creative emotional expression & processing.
