Why I Became a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

My interest in mental health stems from my belief that the mind is often an undervalued contributor in Western medicine. The mind-body connection is so important to understanding how to help a patient and it is time the world has one more provider to help people feel seen. I attempt to live a life that is sustainable and as holistic as possible. My hope is that my career transition will further align my life philosophies and allow me to help others lead their own fulfilling lives.

While I will have prescriptive privileges in my career, psychopharmacology only goes so far in helping mental health conditions. I believe in empowering patients to do “the work” behind their mental health condition through psychotherapy. Adding focus on nutrition, meditation, art and music therapy, and massage can be extremely beneficial to overall well being.

Bio

Hey everyone! My name is Megan and I am studying at Walden University for my PMHNP. I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio but currently reside in Denver, CO after a travel nurse assignment led me to stay here full time. I was traveling, nursing full-time since 2018, and have been to NC, SC, IL, OH obviously, and now CO. I travel with my 11-year-old cat George (the girl) and recently started adopting every plant I meet. In my free time, I enjoy traveling for leisure, mindfulness practices, yoga, running, reading, concerts, being creative, local community events, and any nature-immersive activity.
